4 Simple Tips to Clean Your Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals make a wonderful addition to your kitchen. They are a great way to make sure that your kitchen sink does not get clogged up so easily, and also ensure that left over food does not go down the drain. Occasionally though your disposal will get backed up and you will start to have an unpleasant smell in your kitchen, and no one wants that. Lucky for you, we have a few simple tips below on how to clean your garbage disposal.

1. CLEAN AROUND THE GARBAGE DISPOSAL

Cleanliness is a big part of making sure your disposal is in great working condition. Before you start any cleaning close to your disposal, be sure that the power is off. Not only should you regularly clean your sink, but you should also pay close attention to your disposal. If you are cleaning and don’t have a lot of time, a rag will do the trick. If you have a little more time an old toothbrush will do the trick! Be sure to contact the leasing office if you have any issues with your disposal and to see if there is a portion of the disposal that can be removed or cleaned.

2. TRY CITRUS FRUITS & PEELS FOR A GOOD CLEAN SMELL

While this will not clean the disposal, it will make it will help freshen it up! The best way to do it is to cut up a lemon or an orange into quarters. After that, you will turn on the disposal and do a quarter at a time until you are finished. Be sure to rinse your sink and disposal out with hot water.

3. USE ICE & SALT for apartment Garbage disposals

While some say that using ice will sharpen the blades, the truth is that most disposals nowadays use a pulverizing technique. The ice and salt mixture allow it to scrub off any old residue that may be in the disposal.

4. USE BAKING SODA & VINEGAR

We would not suggest using this as an all-purpose cleaner but, on occasion, it would work well for a disposal. The mixture of the 2 cleaning agents creates a fizz that can get residue off your disposal.

We hope you can use these tips to help keep your apartments disposal clean and our property in tip top shape! Please, also be aware that if you are having any issues with your disposal or any small appliance please the leasing office during Le Rivage’s hours of operation.
